Family Gathering and the Deck

Saturday August 16th was the day everybody came to the house. Dad barbequed, and we all got to visit and catch up. It was a little overcast, but a nice day to be outside. Great to see everybody.

The day before was the day of the Gold Cup and Saucer Parade. I had planned on going, but James and I were itching to get the front deck built, so we stayed at the house to work on that.

This is what Mom and Dad have been living with for three years, the temporary construction steps thrown together by the contractor when he was working on the house, and were never meant to be permanent. Not very nice, and a hazard for getting into the house. So James and I went to Montague and picked up the materials. I had made construction plans for the deck and figured out exactly what we needed, so when we got the wood and screws we were able to put it together like a kit, with very little waste. It rained on us once in a while but not too bad. We built the frame and the next day we put the deck on. We finished just as everybody was arriving for the barbeque.
I think we did a pretty good job. Thanks James, it was fun!

I bolted the bench along the end to serve as a place to sit, and as a safety barrier. We also installed a handrail at the west end.

David moved some iris', I laid some more bricks to widen the walk to access the railing, and we transplanted some Bishop's Weed to grow into a ground cover that will fill in and cover the bare earth.
One more project off the list!
