Carter visited the house early this morning and took the following photos. I will see the house for the first time since November in less than four weeks, and Mom and Dad will be moving in. Now that the work is down to the details, I need to see the progress and decide where to focus next. There is still years worth of work to do but it's best to stop as soon as possible, take a breath and evaluate where it's all at. There is still some work to be done between now and the end of the month just to finish off what has been started. Next week the process of mudding the walls will begin. Once that is complete, the kitchen cabinets will be installed. It is up in the air right now whether there will be time for Mike to install the hardwood flooring before I get there. None of the trim will be installed now. But I will order the paint and when I'm there my focus will be to paint the exterior trim, kitchen walls, kitchen cabinets, Mom and Dad's bedroom walls and some ceilings. If we can't get all of that done in a week, Mom and Dad will carry on and finish the painting. The main level bathroom walls are pine which will eventually be painted, but the naked pine will do as a finish for now. The basement bathroom shower will get ceramic tile so while I'm there we will pick out the tile and have it installed later. Other spaces will remain rough and unpainted for now.
The change since last week is the most dramatic since the project started. The house is bright and looking almost ready for the move!
Below is the new closet under the stairs to the second floor.
The drywall in the Kitchen is finished.
The Dining Room
The new Parlour at the front of the house. You can see where there will be a hanging light fixture in front of the front door, and a pot light that will illuminate the wall next to the door.
Insulation and vapour barrier are done on the second floor. The drywall will wait for a while.
The Parlour, looking at the door to the Dining Room. This space used to be a bedroom.
In the far corner is where the china cabinet that George Lowe built will be located, where we used to have the sideboard, which will now be in the kitchen.
The north wall of the kitchen where the cabinets will be located. They are almost complete and will be installed at the end of the month. The carpenter is Joe Dunphy. He has an excellent reputation for doing high quality high end custom made cabinets. This is his website: Joe Dunphy Woodworking
The old tool closet will become the pantry with roll-out shelves for food storage. All of the original wainscot will be put back.
Love the front porch with the old floorboards on the walls.
The light bulb will be replaced with track lighting.
View out the kitchen skylight above where the stove will be.
View from the bathroom across the hall into the kitchen. That is the door of the new closet under the stairs in the background.
The transom above the bathroom door, and you can see the skylights in the back hall that allows borrowed light into the bathroom and kitchen.
In the bathroom. The toilet will go behind the door, and will be installed in the next few days. That will be a momentous occasion! No more bucket!
Below is the opening for the window that George Lowe signed, as seen from the bathroom door across the back hall. The window is in storage and will be carefully restored to its original location. The shingles will remain and the panels to the right, which was the wall finish of the pantry, will be removed and shingled as well.
Thermostat for one of 8 heating zones in the house. THE HEAT IS ON.
2 of the 3 skylights in the back hall
That's a lot of technology!
Mom and Dad's bedroom
All of the walls in this room, directly under the kitchen, will have horizontal tongue-and-groove pine which will be finished off early next week.
Beyond the wall is Mom and Dad's walk-in closet. The old cast iron sink that I got from Kerras will be hung on this wall after the pine goes up.
The door to the left is the wine cellar. In that room the walls will be cedar and the ceiling will be copper. There will be some cabinetry below and wine racks above. Those finishes will wait for a while. The middle door is to the mechanical/ storage room, and the door at right is to Mom and Dad's bedroom. These walls will also be finished in pine and will eventually be painted.
Installing insulation between the the basement bathroom and the main space. I haven't figured out what to call it really. Maybe its the summer kitchen?
The concrete board in Mom and Dad's bathroom for the ceramic tiles. We'll pick the tiles when I'm there. The floor in the bathroom will also have tiles.
The outhouse is still there, just in case
What a great sunny spring day. I think we will have to prune the red pine.
The electrical service by the new driveway. When the garage gets rebuilt, this will be mounted on it.
Starting to look like its old self.
The well head
The view behind the house out to the River
Thanks once again Carter. I am amazed how good it looks. I cannot wait to get there! 26 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!
