The second dumpster was taken away
The second floor railing is still there

Front bedroom upstairs
The cross beams and king posts in the ceiling are beautiful, so we are going to drywall the walls to the peak and leave them exposed when it's finished

I taped all of the windows to stabilize the glass for when the house is lifted

We took a little road trip to the Cape Bear Lighthouse, which was at one time a Marconi station. This lighthouse received the first distress call from the Titanic. There is an effort to raise money to save this building. The cliff is eroding and they need to move it very soon or it will topple into the Northumberland Strait.

Monday July 5, 2010

Yeah, I know I'm behind, but I'm catching up. On Monday, Loreen, Danny and Betty went home. Thank you so much for all of your help. It was great to see you again, and next time we will be staying in the house!
Then Dolly, David and I went to Montague. I had some running around to do, and we also visited the Garden of the Gulf Museum, see below. It is the oldest museum in the province, and was originally the customs house for Montague. I got into a conversation with the curator Donna Collings and it turns out that she is the grand niece of George Lowe, the original owner of the house! We had a great chat and we will keep in touch.

Then back to the house to assess what we had done. The floor had a major sag in the middle between the Parlour and Dining Room when we started, worse than last year, but once the weight of the plaster was out for a day, the floor bounced back up again! We removed six and a half tons of material from the house and it is now ready for the new work to begin! The pantry will be coming off too but we ran out of room in the dumpster so the foundation contractor will remove that for us.

Sunday we got the bulk of the work done. The main chimney came down and the back sun room was removed.

Bricks from both chimneys to be reused as a garden wall.

We found the original oilcloth floor covering n the front hall

Friday July 2, 2010

Friday we tore off the front porch, tore down the kitchen chimney and gutted the kitchen. We found evidence of a fire in the roof some time in the past, in the roof around the chimney. I have no idea why the house didn't burn down. Could have happened in 1910, or last month.

CANADA DAY EH

Day off
We walked across the bridge from the rental house to the Murray Harbour Community Centre and ate fresh whole lobsters on the lawn, then inside for strawberry shortcake and tea while a local Scottish band played. After that we drove to Panmure Island Beach and sat in the sand. Of course it got clowdy but the water was too cold to get into anyway.

I thought the dumpster would last 2 weeks, but we had to exchange it after 2 days
